By invitation only. The program is open to students sponsored through SFS Instars or NSF Emerge Fellowships. At this orientation workshop, new Instars and Emerge Fellows will meet peers who have similar interests in the study of freshwaters, graduate student mentors, and faculty who will guide them through the meeting. We will introduce the themes of the meeting program and explore topics of common interest to participants. Instars and Emerge program participants will be encouraged to present results of research during the week of the meeting. Following the meeting, they will work as teams in professional development activities based on chosen themes explored at the meeting. Interested participants (undergraduate students, graduate students, and early career professionals), as well as faculty supporting URM students are encouraged to contact members of the planning committee from each program to develop pre-meeting discussions and networking. Applications to participate in the program as either Instars or Emerge Fellows are typically due the first week of February; applications for Instars graduate mentors are typically due in March. Please visit the SFS website for more information: www.freshwater-science.org

For preregistered participants only. The Society for Freshwater Science Taxonomic Certification Program was implemented to certify that trained and skilled persons are providing aquatic invertebrate and diatom identifications in North America. The certification program tests a candidate’s knowledge and skills in aquatic invertebrate and diatom taxonomy and provides the successful applicant with a certificate of proficiency. The program also helps promote undergraduate and graduate training of new taxonomic experts, training of taxonomic technicians through workshops, development of new manuals for identifying aquatic invertebrates and algae, and taxonomic excellence in other disciplines and other parts of the world. The Taxonomic Certification Program is overseen by the Taxonomic Certification Committee, and administered by Stroud Water Research Center. The successful completion of the taxonomic certification process results in a certificate of proficiency in performing taxonomic identifications of freshwater benthic macroinvertebrates. This process includes payment of a certification fee and passing an examination for a particular region and taxonomic group with a score of 95% or better. As part of this program, the certification credentials remain valid for a period of five years. For the Joint Aquatic Sciences Meeting, the Society for Freshwater Science’s Taxonomic Certification Program hosts a series of order, family, and genus-level certification exams using both images and specimens for various aquatic macroinvertebrates, as well as a genus-level diatom certification exam. Visit www.stroudcenter.org/sfstcp for a complete list and to register.

About Instars/Emerge

Instars and Emerge are mentoring programs sponsored by the Society for Freshwater Science (Instars) and the National Science Foundation (Emerge) for undergraduate students, graduate students, and early career professionals from under-represented groups interested in freshwater science. Both Instars and Emerge programs also provide opportunities for networking among participants and Society members hoping to encourage diversity in the freshwater discipline. The 2022 installment of the Instars and Emerge programs will take place at the Joint Aquatic Sciences Meeting, May 14-20, in Grand Rapids, MI, where the theme will be “Rapid Changes ~ Collaborative Solutions.”
